The Global Co-operative Movement is one of the largest organised segments of civil society, and plays a vital role in the empowerment of the economically disadvantaged.
Experts agree that the poor themselves must be centrally involved in the global campaign against poverty. Solutions such as fair trade, trade justice and co-operative expansion all do this, putting people at the centre of development and empowering communities to bring themselves out of poverty.
How do we take these solutions further?

The co-operative model offers an alternative in aid delivery to government institutions or private companies. Whilst the former have traditionally suffered from problems of inefficiency, lack of transparency and corruption, the latter has seen shareholder interests come first, with profits often made at the expense of significant social and welfare losses.
The co-operative model resolves these tensions putting people, rather than business or governments, at the centre of economic development; empowering them to build their own organisations to bring themselves out of poverty. They are run in a democratic way, through the one member, one vote system, and prioritise community development, with profits being re-invested back into local services and infrastructure, whether this be through the provision of running water, or by building health clinics and schools.
What more that can we do to support the development of co-operatives across the globe?

Co-operative values are easily adaptable to a developing country. Co-operatives played a vital part in British life before the rise of the state.
The building society model, if encouraged and supported in developing countries, could provide the finance to communities that get ripped off by the existing structures and are ignored by the banks.
Such a model would encourage community partnership, ownership and a sense of enterprise.

Can co-operative movement ever achieve co-operative commonwealth? I mean complete co-operative republic. If it does, then the problem of the common man in ended. If we should attempt to achieve this, then also the starting point must be to embark on massive co-operative education. On this regard, the international development agencies still has a lot to do.
